The Role of Video-Assisted Thoracoscopy in Scoliosis Treatment
نویسندگان
چکیده
Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has gained in popularity in the treatment of scoliosis in the last years. It is a minimally invasive surgery that prevents blood loss and results in minimal damage to the thoracic wall, better cosmetic appearance and shorter hospitalization time compared to conventional thoracotomy. Technical difficulty, a steep learning curve, longer operation times and applicability in a limited patient group with a certain type of curve are the disadvantages of this procedure. The role, indication, surgical technique and clinical results of the procedure were reviewed. Despite the small number of reports on VATS, the results are promising. VATS seems to be as effective as conventional thoracotomy in performing discectomy and anterior release. However, accepting VATS as an alternative to posterior instrumented fusion in adolescent idiopathatic scoliosis has not been clarified and randomized clinical trials are still lacking. The Role of Thoracoscopy in the Diagnosis of Pleural Effusion of Unknown Origin
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery is preferred over conventional methods, such as pleural biopsy, in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with pleural effusion. Considering that Imam Khomeini Hospital is facing a large volume of patients with pleural effusion of unknown origin referred from other centers, the present study was conducted to investigate the role of...
متن کاملSurgery for Idiopathic Scoliosis: Currently Applied Techniques
This review discusses the basic knowledge and recent innovation of surgical treatment for scoliosis. Surgical treatment for scoliosis is indicated, in general, for a curve exceeding 45 to 50 degrees by the Cobb's method on the basis that: Curves larger than 50 degrees progress even after skeletal maturity.Curves larger than 60 degrees cause loss of pulmonary function, and much larger curves cau...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Results of Pulmonary Resection by Minimally Invasive Thoracoscopy for the Surgical Treatment of Lung Cancer
Introduction: Lung cancer is the disease of modern era, and the rate of lung cancer mortality is three times as high as that for prostate cancer and twice as high as the rate for breast cancer. We aimed to analyze the results of pulmonary resection in patients with NSCLC by minimally invasive thoracoscopy. Materials and Methods: We studied 10 patients with NSCLC scheduled for surgical resectio...
متن کاملMinimally Invasive Anterior Spinal Exposure and Release in Children with Scoliosis
BACKGROUND The early experience with thoracoscopy in children has involved the diagnosis and treatment of pleural and pulmonary diseases. Recent advances have allowed surgeons to perform more complex procedures through video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), potentially decreasing the pain and pulmonary impairment associated with an open thoracotomy. The authors report their initial experi...

A retrospective study was done from October 1992 to December 1996 of 48 patients who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopy. A male to female ratio of 3.7:1 was seen, with a mean age of 50 +/- 19 years. The underlying diagnoses included spontaneous pneumothorax (n = 23), malignant pleural effusion (n = 16), lung disease (n = 4), trauma (n = 2), empyema (n = 2) and oesophageal carcinoma (n = 1). ...
